Road rehabilitation works along the West Honiara/Tandai Highway, involving an upgrade from a 2-lane to 4-lane road, are now nearing completion.
Most sections have finished and are already delivering benefits to road users.
The final major areas of work are the Rove and Bishop Dale roundabouts where construction activities are ongoing to complete the remaining critical components of the upgrade.
At the Rove Roundabout, works on the seaside section have been completed, while construction on the landside section is still progressing.
These remaining activities include finishing works aimed at strengthening the road structure, improving drainage and traffic circulation, as well enhancing safety, for both motorists and pedestrians, through the installation of various road safety measures such as signs and markings and street lights.
As work along the landside section continues, from the Rove Roundabout to St John school, members of the public are advised to exercise caution when travelling through these areas, as construction activity and changing weather conditions may result in temporary traffic delays and disruptions.
Supervising Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Mr Mike Qaqara, said the project is delivering important improvements to one of Honiara’s busiest transport corridors.
He said once completed, the rehabilitated highway will provide safer, smoother, and more reliable travel, supporting economic activity and daily commuting in West Honiara.
“We are pleased with the progress made along the West Honiara/Tandai Highway.
“While works are still ongoing at key locations such as the Bishop Dale and Rove roundabouts, these improvements are necessary to ensure the road meets required safety and durability standards.
“Once completed, the upgraded road will significantly improve traffic flow, road safety, and overall driving conditions for all users.
“The continued patience and understanding of the general public, during these road improvements, is much appreciated,” Mr Qaqara said.
The project team continues to work steadily to complete the remaining sections, with progress subject to weather and site conditions.
Motorists and pedestrians are strongly urged to follow traffic management signage, observe speed limits, and cooperate with traffic controllers on site to ensure everyone’s safety while works are underway.
The upgrade works are being undertaken by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), a collaboration between the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Solomon Islands Government.
