Government lawyers have gone on an indefinite strike as of today, after the government failed to respond to a 28-day strike notice to improve their terms and conditions of service.

A media statement from the Government Lawyers Association said after many discussions, correspondences and attempts to dialogue over the months since January 2018, it observed there was a lack of serious commitment by the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs and the Ministry of Public Service.

The strike notice issued in early November lapsed yesterday.

GLA said all along it sought to work collaboratively and in dialogue with the government to address the issue.

In the Association\’s view the matter could have been handled better by the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs and the Ministry of Public Service.

It is unfortunate it said, that this matter has come to this stage.

The Government Lawyers Association consists of lawyers from the Attorney Generals Chambers, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Public Solicitors Office and Law Reform Commission.

It also includes lawyers employed within the Office of Public Trustee and Legal policy section in the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs.
