Australia is supporting the deployment of provincial assessment teams following Cyclone Raquel.

A statement from the Australian High Commission today says, the team will assess levels of damage to households, livelihood and infrastructure caused by the cyclone.

Acting Australian High Commissioner Dr Dave Peebles says, Australia is very pleased to support the deployment of provincial assessment teams, as a crucial part of Solomon Islands’ response to Cyclone Raquel.

Mr Peebles says the teams will support the National Disaster Management Office and Solomon Islands Government to quickly obtain first-hand information on the impact of the cyclone.

Meanwhile, Director of the National Disaster Management Office Loti Yates says the timely assessment is important to ensure the right assistance is given to communities following this event.

The Australian-funded Pacific Patrol boats, the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force vessel, Lata, will be used during the assessment.
