The Parliamentary Opposition has said while it welcomes the establishment of an Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), other anti-corruption agencies and institutions should also be strengthened.

This came after the Democratic Coalition for Change (DCC) Government announced its intention to establish an ICAC.

Opposition Leader, Jeremiah Manele said strengthening the other agencies and institutions should include reviewing and developing a new leadership code regime and legislation.

He said the government should also strengthen the country\’s existing legislation and penal codes to fight corruption.

He adds that reviewing and strengthening the role of the Ombudsman\’s Office and the establishment of a code of ethics for politicians and leaders should also be considered.

Meanwhile, the Opposition Leader said mandates and linkages between anti-corruption institutions, including the Police and the Director of Public Prosecution should also be strengthened.

He said this should also be done at the provincial level with similar provisions.

Mr Manele encouraged the government to prioritise the establishment of an ICAC if it is serious about tackling corruption head-on.
