A new economic initiative on coconut production has been introduced to the coconut farmers in Makia on Ugi island.

The initiative marks an important step forward for local livelihoods.

A farmer Jerry Wala from the island said a new coconut charcoal project has come on board, adding value to existing copra production at the community level.

“The community recently witnessed a live demonstration conducted by a Chinese buyer and exporter of coconut charcoal.

“The demonstration showcased the processing of coconut shells into charcoal, highlighting an additional income stream for coconut farmers,” he said.

The project manager and a Member of the Makira Ulawa provincial government visit the community to introduce the project.

The team conducted an awareness session with the local community and demonstrated the charcoal processing techniques.

“With copra production continuing to rise, this means we are not limited to only one source of income.

“Coconut shells, which were often overlooked, can now become another growing market,” Wala said.
